Fly Bridge versus Sport Yacht

SPORT VERSUS FLYBRIDGE YACHT

Another topic of debate in the yachting world is the difference between the various types of boats, in particular the central theme is the definition of Sports Yachts and Fly bridge.

A Sport yacht, or even an open yacht, is a boat whose main features are:

  • High performance
  • planing hull
  • single deck on the hull
  • sporty and appealing look

Sports yachts are designed to reach high speeds. Thanks to the different engines and propulsion configurations, they are able to achieve high performance in terms of maximum and cruising speed.

A fly bridge boat is characterized by having an area in the "roof" of the boat - namded fly  - where there is a driving position and a sunbathing area.

This area is generally covered by a hard top.

Furthermore, these boats are designed with a planing hull.

Both sport boats and flybridge are often equipped with the latest state-of-the-art equipment.

Unlike sports yachts, flybridge are by definition more comfortable even if they are still very performers.

UNDERSTANDING THE VOLVO PENTA IPS PROPULSION ENGINES

For ten years since its launch into the yachting market the IPS propulsion system was built specifically to suit high performance and sport yachts designed for speed and superior navigation. Now expanding into boats up to 100 feet, the Volvo Penta IPS Engine is revolutionizing the navigation and performance of sport and high performance yachts.

The Volvo Penta IPS is not a simple engine but is a complete control and navigation system including a steering wheel, joystick, superior controls, propulsion units and bow facing propellers. By expanding into boats up to 100 feet this engine has begun to revolutionize navigation and bring its benefits such as reduced fuel consumption, improved sailing comfort and greater maneuverability to a more widespread audience of boaters.

Unlike most of its competitors, the propellers in the Volvo IPS Propulsion engine are mounted on the front end of the propulsion unit which produce a counter with drawer effect menaing the wake is parallel to the boat bottom, making sure that all the power developed can push it forward.

During in depth performance testing, the propulsion system’s high efficiency was 20% more rapid in comparison to a traditional installation in-line, with a reduction of fuel consumption of 30%, an increase of 15% in acceleration and a reduction 50% in the levels of noise and vibration.

THE BENEFITS OF VOLVO PENTA IPS

  • 30% less CO2 emissions
  • 30% reduced fuel consumption
  • 50% lower perceived noise level
  • Safe predictable handling
  • Joystick for superior maneuverability

FILIPPETTI S55 and S65 with VOLVO PENTA IPS engine

The Volvo Penta IPS drive unit mounted on board FILIPPETTI S55 offers a maximum speed of 38 knots and a cruising speed of 32. With this propulsion system, the boat provides a range (at cruising speed) of 310 nautical miles.

The Filippetti S65, with the Volvo Penta IPS configuration, can reach to a top speed of 43 knots and a cruising speed of 32. In this case the range at cruising speed is 315 nautical miles.
